PAKISTAN’S FLOOD VICTIMS NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Pakistan contributes less than 1% of global Greenhouse emissions, yet it is clearly facing the tragic consequences caused by climate change. Recent monster floods have affected 33 million people with more than 1300 people losing their lives and washed away 45% of Pakistan’s cropland. Overall, a third of Pakistan — or an area roughly the size of the UK — is inundated.

Preliminary assessments put the total cost of physical losses around US$ 11 billion and overall economic losses to about 3% of Pakistan’s GDP. More than 3000 km of roads have been destroyed, 145 bridges washed away, roughly a million houses damaged and more than a million livestock perished.

There is an urgency now to provide relief to an estimated 5 million people who have been impacted by the floods, specially food, medicines, clothing and shelter needs.

Unfortunately, evidence exists to prove that COVID-19 had already set us back substantially in terms of educational outcomes. And now the floods have completely washed away thousands of schools. It will be a huge undertaking to start the education process again.

Urgent attention is also required to deal with spread of waterborne diseases including but not limited to diarrhea, especially among children, cholera, typhoid and hepatitis E, malaria and dengue.

We must also consider the vulnerable groups and their special needs. Pregnant women, young children, old women and men, disabled people — all require special and prioritised attention to their condition and needs.

Therefore, I would humbly request all Pakistani brothers and sisters as well as our dearest Aussie friends and well-wishers, to come forward and do your best in the name of humanity. I also suggest that instead of sending relief goods from abroad, please consider local procurement from within Pakistan and have them delivered to NDMA or your choice of charity organisation to save precious time.
